God’s Plan “A” (Sermon from Matthew 20:1-16)

If the number of times you think about a passage of scripture counts for anything, or the number of times you quote or refer to a passage correlates to how important you think one of Jesus’ teachings is, then the parable Jesus tells about workers being hired to work in a vineyard is one of the most essential stories in Matthew’s gospel for me and my understanding of Jesus. It’s a parable that underscores what Isaiah says about God’s thoughts not being our thoughts, and our ways not being God’s ways. It goes without saying – God’s ways are better!
